Meryl Conte Clayton

Meryl Conte Clayton, a New Jersey native and long-time Florida resident, has been a practicing attorney for more than 32 years – admitted to practice law in New Jersey in 1984 and in Florida in 1995. She maintains active practices in both states focusing on the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, guardianship, elder law, real estate, and business law.

Meryl is committed to leveraging her vast wealth of experience to help individuals and families plan their legacies, protect their loved ones, and, when necessary, facilitate the resolution of unfortunate family disputes. She seeks to accomplish her client’s goals of health care and financial care before and distribution of the estate following death. With practical advice and compassion, Meryl assists her clients with understanding the value of their estates and with choosing and executing appropriate estate planning documents and trusts.

Meryl’s New Jersey – Florida connection represents a powerful advantage for her clients. Meryl can advise clients on issues, institute court proceedings, and file necessary documents in both states for the convenience of families with homes or assets in Florida and New Jersey. Meryl is able to advise residents of New Jersey and the North East who wish to relocate and retire to Florida on the state’s homestead and residency requirements so her client’s may enjoy the benefits of Florida’s favorable tax and estate laws.

Meryl has been a Member Agent with Attorney’s Title Insurance Fund, Florida, and is licensed to write title in Florida. She has represented purchasers and sellers of real estate, both commercial and residential, with preparation and review of documents and title, deed transfers, and conducting closings.

Business clients will appreciate Meryl’s advice regarding formation of an appropriate business entity and ongoing management of their company.

Meryl graduated from Seton Hall University in 1979 and earned her Juris Doctorate from Quinnipiac College School of Law in 1983. She is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States District Court for the State of New Jersey, and the New Jersey and Florida courts.

She is a member of the Bar Associations of New Jersey and Florida, the Sarasota County Bar Association, Bergen County Bar Association, Women Lawyers in Bergen, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, and the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys. Meryl has been a licensed real estate agent in Florida since 2004, currently inactive.

Meryl was a featured speaker at the 2012 New Jersey Registered Dieticians’ Annual Meeting at which she spoke on contracts and business entity formation. She has spoken to real estate and business groups on various real estate and estate matters.

Among many other volunteer positions, Meryl was a member of the Boards of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, Sarasota, Cardinal Mooney High School, Family Promise of Sarasota, and Agape Corner Children’s Boarding School and Ministries, and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. She has been a member of the Steering Committees, 2012 and 2013, and co-chair of the Health Fair Committee of the New Jersey Governor’s Conference for Women, a Gala Committee member for Immaculate Heart Academy, Washington Township, and a Committee member for The Designer Showhouse of New Jersey for Hackensack University Medical Center.
